About Us
Madhouse Oysters is a family-run oyster aquaculture farm located on Hooper Island, MD, in the heart of the Chesapeake Bay. The name “Madhouse” reflects the challenging early years of our operation, characterized by inadequate equipment, inefficient processes, and limited assistance. Despite these obstacles, our dedicated three-person crew upholds the highest standards in producing top-quality oysters.
Our Process
From larvae to maturity, we oversee every stage of oyster growth using advanced aquaculture techniques to ensure the finest quality. As a small, family-run business, we are hands-on in every aspect of the operation, from the farm to shipping. Our commitment to excellence is reflected in our nationwide shipping, guaranteeing that every oyster in our bags originates directly from our farm.
Commitment to Sustainability
The oyster is a keystone species in the Chesapeake Bay, playing a critical role in the bay’s ecological balance. Our farmed oysters promote sustainability by requiring no external food input, contributing to water filtration (up to 50 gallons per oyster per day), and fostering increased aquatic life diversity in our region.
Generational Stewardship
Sustainability is a core value at Madhouse Oysters. Scott Sr., along with Scottie and Scott III, represents the fourth, fifth and sixth generations of the Robinson family dedicated to oyster farming. We acknowledge the integral part that oysters play in providing livelihoods for future generations, as they actively improve water quality and support a thriving ecosystem that includes treasured marine life such as seahorses.
Our Mission
While the work is demanding, the satisfaction of delivering exceptional oysters and receiving rave reviews makes every effort worthwhile. Madhouse Oysters proudly carries on the tradition of sustainable oyster farming, ensuring the ongoing health of the Chesapeake Bay while providing the highest-quality oysters to customers nationwide.
